He had huge success with relations based movies such as Dariya Dil(1988),Swarg(1990)and Hum(1991).He worked with David Dhawan for the first time in the 1989 action based movie Taaqatwar. Then great successful partnership with David and then went onto act near about in 18 movies directed by him most of which were comedy films. The most successful comedy films during their joint effort included Shola Aur Shabnam(1992), Aankhen(1993), Raja Babu(1994), Coolie No. 1(1995), Saajan Chale sasural(1996), Hero No. 1(1997), Deewana Mastana(1997), Bade Miyan Chote Miyan(1998), Haseena Maan Jaayegi(1999), Jodi No. 1(2001) and Partner(2007). Govinda also tried his luck for a villainous role in the movie 'Shikari' directed by N.Chandra. His performance in the movie was awesome. After a tuff  phase during 2002 until 2005, then he comeback  with a number of big hits movie, starting with bhagam bhag in 2006 and partner 2007 with Salmaan Khan (salu).
